Somerville and Cambridge are both introducing Community Choice Electricity plans designed to increase the demand for and stabilize the price of locally produced renewable energy. Under both programs, you are automatically enrolled to receive your electricity from local renewable sources at a rate higher than required by the state of Massachusetts. You can opt out of the entire program, or you can opt up to receive 100% of your electricity from local renewable sources. The Energy and Environment lab (#ee) encourages everyone reading this to opt up to the 100% renewable option.
Somerville Community Choice Electricity Plan
The CCE plan in Somerville automatically enrolls you to receive renewable energy at a rate 5% higher than required by the state of Massachusetts. In Somerville, when you opt-up, Eversource still delivers and supplies your electricity. The Community Choice Electricity program guarantees lower rates than the Eversource renewable energy service.
The Somerville 100% Local Green energy option rate is $0.13198/kWh, compared to $0.10538/kWh for the default option, a difference of 2.66¢/kWh or 25%. The difference results in a few dollars per month for a monumental increase in demand and stability for the local renewable energy market.
To opt up to receive 100% local renewable energy in Somerville, contact Dynegy, the program supplier, directly at (866) 220-5696 Monday – Friday between 9AM and 8PM or by email at DESCustCare@Dynegy.com. Have your Eversource account information ready when you call.
If the 100% option feels inaccessible financially, know that remaining at 5% over the state requirement still contributes to the green energy effort by helping to increase demand for renewable energy and decrease reliance on nonrenewable sources. Increased demand for renewable energy brings investors and jobs to Massachusetts and helps both Somerville and Massachusetts move toward carbon neutrality.
To learn more about Somerville’s Community Choice Energy plan, you can read about the program on the CCE website or attend an informational meeting Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 6PM in the Somerville High School library, located at 81 Highland Avenue in Somerville.
Cambridge Community Choice Electricity Plan
The Cambridge CCE plan focuses on encouraging the solar power industry in Cambridge. Through the default plan option, residents can receive 25% more solar energy than required by the state while paying less than the Eversource basic service rate. You can also opt up to receive 100% renewable power. Eversource continues as the distributor for your power, and Agera Energy supplies the energy. At the basic level, all solar renewable electricity certificates are purchased from projects in or near Cambridge, which creates demand for more local solar power work.
Beginning in July 2017, Cambridge residents are automatically enrolled to receive 25% more solar energy than required by the state at $0.10486/kWh.
When you opt up to receive 100% renewable energy from New England renewable energy projects, the rate is $0.1218/kWh, a difference of 1.6¢/kWh, or 16%. The difference makes a very small impact on your electricity bill but an incredible impact on the environment.
