We need to inundate Charlie Baker with calls to let him know we strongly oppose his plan to involve Massachusetts law enforcement in the Trump deportation campaign. The governor has filed a bill that would allow state and local police to cooperate with ICE in detaining immigrants that pose “a threat to public safety,” defined in a very broad, and very unclear, way. Its reference to removable aliens puts documented as well as undocumented immigrants at risk. The bill places the governor squarely on the side of the Trump administration and against the Supreme Judicial Court. Let’s tell Charlie that’s not where we want our state to stand. Call him at 617-725-4005.

SCRIPT: Hi, I’m (NAME) calling from (ZIP) to tell Governor Baker I am strongly opposed to the anti-immigrant bill he filed yesterday. His bill undercuts the Supreme Judicial Court’s decision protecting immigrants’ due process rights and supports the Trump administration’s deportation agenda instead. It’s also probably unconstitutional. The governor’s bill stands in direct opposition to our deepest values as a state.

Let’s tell our senators we oppose the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017, S.1460. The bill would lock in our dependence on fossil fuels for decades. It expedites the approval process for Liquid Natural gas terminals, bypasses review by the EPA for the traditionally more compliant Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, streamlines review of drilling on public lands, supports unproven “clean coal” technologies, and barely mentions solar and wind power. Mitch McConnell has fast-tracked the act, bypassing the committee review process to push the complex 850+ page bill straight to the senate floor. Call Senators Markey (202-224-2742) and Warren (202-224-4543) and urge them to do all they can to defeat S1460.

SCRIPT: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I live in [CITY]. I’m calling to urge [SENATOR NAME] to oppose S.1460, the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017. I am deeply concerned about climate change, and this bill takes us in the wrong direction, locking in our dependence on fossil fuels for decades. (MENTION ONE OR TWO POINTS OUTLINED ABOVE.) I’d like the senator to do everything possible to make sure it doesn’t become law. Thanks you.

Urge Senators Markey and Warren to cosponsor the Dream Act (S1615), a bipartisan bill that would grant permanent legal status to Dreamers who meet certain criteria. It’s critical to support this bill now, given the fact that DACA is under attack by Texas and 9 other states who’ve threatened to sue if the administration doesn’t start phasing out the program by September 5. DACA status has increased recipients’ hourly wages by an average of 42% and given them the purchasing power to buy homes, cars, and other goods and services, which drives economic growth for everyone. It also allows young people to further their education and participate more fully in their communities, and that benefits us all. Let’s call Senators Warren (202-224-4543) and Markey (202-224-2742) and tell them to support the bill.

SCRIPT: Hi, this is (NAME). I’m calling from (ZIP) to urge the senator to co-sponsor S1615, the bipartisan bill that would grant permanent legal status to the many Dreamers who contribute so much to our communities and our economy. It’s critical to show support for the bill now to counteract the pressure on the administration, from Texas and 9 other states, to start phasing out the bill. Please co-sponsor immediately and encourage your colleagues to do the same. Thank you.
